From Senescence Physiology to Postharvest Management: A Review of Strategies for Extending Cut Flower Vase Life

Abstract

The floriculture industry holds significant economic importance, particularly within the cut flower sector. However, once detached from the mother plant, cut flowers inevitably enter a senescence process that rapidly diminishes their quality and aesthetic appeal. This review, focusing on recent advancements in chemical preservatives, thoroughly investigates the intricate physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying post-harvest senescence. These mechanisms encompass disruptions in water balance, alterations in macromolecular metabolism, compromises to cell membrane integrity, and fluctuations in endogenous plant hormone levels. Subsequently, this study classifies chemical preservative solutions into distinct categories: pre-treatment, bud-opening, and vase solutions. It further scrutinizes their key components, such as water, carbohydrates, organic acids, antimicrobial agents, plant growth regulators, and soluble inorganic salts. The ultimate objective of this comprehensive overview is to furnish an updated and holistic framework to guide future research and facilitate the development of novel chemical preservation strategies, thereby extending the vase life and enhancing the economic value of cut flowers in the global market
